Light Mediterranean Meals Paired with Ample Dessert

Inspiration: Elf Cafe, LA

Open since 2006, Elf Cafe serves up Mediterranean-inspired vegetarian cuisine in a small, candle-lit room in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.  Elf’s ambiance is intimate and relaxed, belying the popularity it’s garnered for its creative and hearty cuisine over the last few years.

My friend Edina and I went mezze style – sharing different plates, sampling each for its flavor and unique combinations.  Our meal included the “Elf Salad,” a  hearty and fresh plate of greens loaded with roasted vegetables, herbs, and a dressing with hints of tahini and zaatar.  We moved onto the “Fava and Chickpea Bruschetta,” which married a tangy chickpea spread with smokey fava beans on a piece of perfectly charred toast.  We finished with a “Moroccan Vegetable Tagine,” a cornucopia of Moroccan spiced veggies poured over protein-rich quinoa, rather than the traditional couscous.  Unfortunately, we didn’t have enough time to round out the meal with a dolce, but the sound of their Apple Tarte Tatin with Orange Blossom Syrup is reason enough to go back.

In a word, Elf Cafe was inspiring – maybe I’ll even try to re-create that bruschetta back at home.  If I do, I’ll make sure to share it.
