Mezze & Dolce

Light Mediterranean Meals Paired with Ample Dessert

Inspiration: Borgo Italia, Oakland

**UPDATE: Bad news first – Borgo Italia has since closed down. Borgo has been replaced with Desco, an Italian restaurant serving fresh pastas, pulled pizzas, and traditional antipasti. The good news? The space is still gorgeous, and the food is an improvement on Borgo’s sometimes salty fare. So no more donuts from heaven, but an even better place for a cozy Italian meal.** –jaime, september 15, 2013

One of the reasons I love my new neighborhood is that every week (it seems!), a new restaurant, cafe, or bar is opening its doors for the first time. Borgo Italia is one of the newest kids on the block, and it’s serving up authentic Italian cuisine on a gorgeously decorated Old Oakland corner. How authentic? Well, the Italian owner’s grandmother is both the muse and supervisor for culinary authenticity and flavor.

While the restaurant serves up hearty lunches and dinners, it’s their dolce that makes this place truly special. On any given day, you can stroll in for a cappuccino and petite pastry at the bar or take a sweet little nibble home for a later dessert. The real magic is the Ciambella – fluffy donuts and donut holes layered with different varieties of light, flavorful cream – chocolate, pistachio, coffee, eggnog. Our favorite was the most basic – “honey and milk” – a sweet, simple cream that paired perfectly with the Ciambella’s airy dough.

Borgo Italia inspired me to embrace simplicity in my cooking, and to be generous in our sharing – we may just bring a box of these next time you invite us over. –jaime
