Inspiration: Ottolenghi, London

Jaime and I have a new obsession and it’s all things Ottolenghi. The name, which I had admittedly not heard until December, belongs to London-based chef Yotam Ottolenghi. Ottolenghi is famous for his “old world meets new” recipes and mouth-wateringly beautiful cookbooks featuring Middle Eastern fare. On a recent work trip to London {I know, I’m a lucky gal}, I set out to visit one of Ottolenghi’s brick-and-mortar establishments to see, and taste, what all the fuss was about.

I stumbled upon the Kensington location, nestled down a little side street off of Kensington Church Street. The tiniest of the four shops throughout London features take-away only but was most certainly worth the trip. I knew as soon as I peeked in the window at the artfully arranged pastries that I was going to a very special place where inspiration abounds. Though the shop was quite small, every available counter and shelf was full of prepared foods {soups, salads, entrees}, packaged goodies {mostly jams and spices}, cookbooks, and baked goods. I had already eaten lunch elsewhere {big mistake}, so I settled on a sampling of sweet treats for the road: a chocolate rugelach, an apricot tart, and a lemon polenta cake. All three were delicious though the lemon polenta cake left me most inspired. I still find myself daydreaming about it. It was, hands down, one of the best things I have ever eaten. I have already tried {and failed} to recreate it once but I will look forward to sharing the recipe with you once I figure its magic out.

If you find yourself in London, make sure to plan a trip to visit Ottolenghi. In the meantime, you can learn more about this chef’s style and influences on this recent podcast from America’s Test Kitchen. –jacque

Spoiler alert: Be on the lookout for future M&D posts featuring recipes from Ottolenghi’s books. Jaime recently received a copy of Jerusalem and Plenty is on my wish list for my upcoming birthday!
