Dolce: Sweet Poppy Bread

Good final

This simple recipe for a sweet, poppy-filled loaf is a Rapaport/Barry family favorite, one that we find so completely delicious, it’s hard to imagine we only make it once a year. Poppy bread is our staple dish for breaking the day-long fast of Yom Kippur (OK, yes, I made this a while ago). I think that calling it a “staple” might not even be sufficient – it’s as if the holiday can’t truly be over without it. Tim and I hosted our own break-fast this year, and I found myself forcefully advocating for our guests to have “at least one bite!” before delving into their full meal. For years after my mom and I emigrated from the East Coast, we used to send packages of poppy bread back to our break-fast host family, knowing that their post-Yom Kippur meal would be incomplete without it.

This recipe is a rarity – it’s a poppy seed dessert that doesn’t involve lemon! And the citrus isn’t missed. The bread is sweet and moist, with a subtle earthiness coming through with the poppy seed. It is also incredibly easy to make and can be turned into either bread or muffins (sometimes I split the recipe into both). Ingredients
makes 2 9 x 5 loaf pans or 1 muffin tin and a loaf pan

5 large eggs

1 cup vegetable oil

2 cups half & half

1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla

3 3/4 cups flour

1 1/3 cups poppy seeds

7 teaspoons baking powder

2 1/2 cups sugar

Directions

1.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2.  Mix wet ingredients (eggs through vanilla) with an electric mixer.

3.  Combine all dry ingredients (flour through sugar) in a separate bowl.

4.  Add them in slowly while beating with the hand mixer until fully mixed together and there are no clumps.

5.  Pour into two 9 x 5 loaf pans.  Bake for 1 hour or until a toothpick or knife comes out clean.

Alternative: Fill 1 lightly greased muffin pan with the batter until each muffin is 3/4 full.  Then pour the rest into a 9 x 5 loaf pan.  The muffins will only take around 25 minutes to bake (check with a toothpick or knife).  The loaf pan will have a little more than the original recipe, so will need around 1 hour and 15 minutes (again, check with a toothpick or knife).
